30 INSTEADS: Part 2 - From Passive to Proactive
Welcome back to Part 2 of our 30 INSTEADS series! Yesterday, we focused on adding depth to our daily interactions. Today, we're leveling up. We're shifting from being passive participants to proactive architects of our lives.
Let's continue with the next five powerful shifts.
1. Invest Instead of Just Spend
Spending is about the immediate transaction—exchanging money for a good or service right now. Investing, however, is about planting seeds for a future harvest. This goes far beyond money. Invest your time in learning a new skill. Invest your energy in building a strong relationship. Invest your attention in things that grow your mind. Ask yourself: "Am I just spending this resource, or am I investing it for a return?" Invest wisely.
2. Create Instead of Just Think
Thinking is the essential first step. It's where ideas are born. But ideas left in your mind are like seeds in a packet—they have potential, but no impact. Creating is the act of planting that seed. It's about making your thoughts tangible. Write the first paragraph. Sketch the design. Build the prototype. Record the song. Don't just be a thinker; be a maker. The world values what you create, not just what you think about.
3. Excel Instead of Just Work
Working means showing up and performing the required tasks. It’s about meeting expectations. Excelling is about surpassing them. It's the extra layer of care, the additional polish, the initiative to solve a problem before being asked. Excellence isn't about perfection; it's about a mindset of continuous improvement and pride in your output. Don't just do your job; imprint it with your signature quality. Excel in your craft.
4. Give Instead of Just Share
Sharing often implies an abundance—you have plenty, so you give some away. It can be conditional. Giving, in its truest sense, is an act of the heart. It's generosity without an expectation of return. You can give your time, your compassion, your full attention, even when you feel you have little to spare. Sharing splits a pie; giving nourishes the soul—both yours and the receiver's. Choose to give generously.
5. Discern Instead of Just Decide Deciding is often a choice between obvious options A or B. It can be quick and reactive. Discerning is a deeper, more intuitive process. It involves seeking wisdom, reading between the lines, and understanding the long-term implications. It’s the difference between choosing a job for the salary (a decision) and choosing a career path that aligns with your purpose (discernment). Slow down. Look beyond the surface. Discern the best path.
That's a wrap for Part 2! These five "insteads" challenge us to be more intentional with our resources, our work, and our generosity.
Which of these shifts resonates most with you right now?
Get ready for Part 3 tomorrow, where we'll explore five more!
Remember:- THE WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT.
