If Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Build a Door: A 5-Step Guide to Creating Your Own Success.

We love the romantic idea of the "big break." We imagine ourselves sitting in a coffee shop when a talent scout taps us on the shoulder, or waiting by the phone for the call that changes everything.

But the reality is, waiting for opportunity to knock is a passive game. And in a fast-moving world, passivity is a risk.
That’s why I love the practical wisdom of Milton Berle’s famous line:

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door."

This quote isn't just a cute pun; it’s a blueprint for success. It shifts the responsibility from the universe to you. It suggests that if the path isn't there, you have the power—and the tools—to create it.

But how do you actually "build a door" in your career or personal life? It’s not about literal carpentry; it’s about mindset and action. Here is a step-by-step guide to becoming an architect of your own opportunities.

Step 1: Identify Where You Want the Door to Go (Clarity).
Before you build, you need a blueprint. You wouldn't build a door in the middle of a blank wall without knowing what’s on the other side.
· The Action: Get specific about your goal. Do you want a promotion? A career change? To meet a specific mentor? To launch a side hustle?
· The Task: Write down your ideal outcome. Instead of saying, "I want to be successful," say, "I want to transition from accounting to project management in the tech industry within the next 12 months." You need to know what "outside" looks like before you can build a way to get there.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools (Skill Up).
You can’t build a door with your bare hands. You need a hammer, saw, and nails. In a professional context, these are your skills and knowledge.
· The Action: Identify the gap between where you are and where you want to be. What tools are you missing?
· The Task: Take an online course, attend a workshop, or read the top five books in your desired field. If you want that project management job, get your PMP certification. If you want to start a business, learn the basics of accounting or social media marketing. Building a door requires competence.

Step 3: Frame the Opening (Networking & Visibility).
A door needs a frame to hold it in place. In your career, your "frame" is your network and your visibility. You need to create the space for the opportunity to exist.
· The Action: Let people know you are building something. Opportunities often come through connections, not job boards.
· The Task:
  · Informational Interviews: Reach out to people doing what you want to do. Ask them about their journey. This builds relationships and insights.
  · Update Your Presence: Refresh your LinkedIn profile to reflect your new direction.
  · Share Your Work: If you’re learning a new skill, share your projects online. This signals to the world that you are actively building.

Step 4: Build the Door (Create Your Own Vehicle).
This is the most literal interpretation of the quote. If the opportunity doesn't exist, invent it. Don't wait for someone to give you a platform; build your own.
· The Action: Create a project that acts as your "door" to the next level.
· The Task:
  · Can't get a writing job? Start a blog or a newsletter. That’s your door.
  · No stage to speak on? Host a Zoom meeting or a local meetup. That’s your door.
  · No promotion at work? Identify a problem the company has that no one is solving, and fix it. Present the solution to your boss. That project is your door.
  · Want to meet influential people? Host a dinner or a virtual coffee chat. You become the hub.

Step 5: Turn the Handle (Consistent Action).
Building the door means nothing if you never turn the handle and walk through it. This is the step where fear usually creeps in. Imposter syndrome hits right as you’re about to step into the new room.
· The Action: Apply, pitch, launch, or ask.
· The Task: Set a deadline. "By Friday, I will apply for that job." "By next month, I will launch my website." "Tomorrow, I will ask my boss for that meeting." You have built the door; now you have to have the courage to open it and walk through.

The Final Word:
Don't sit by the window waiting for opportunity to stroll down your street. Get up, grab your tools, and start building.

The most successful people aren't lucky; they are resourceful. They understand that a door is just a solution to a wall. So, identify your wall, build your door, and step into the future you’ve designed for yourself.
